Full Circle
It was Dean.
John will shake his head later and wonder why he didn't see it before.
But right now, all his thoughts come to a screeching halt as the pieces suddenly click into place, part of a giant puzzle that somehow makes perfect sense and no sense at all.
It was Dean.
Dean, the man he had bought a cup of coffee for in 1973, Dean, who had convinced him to buy the Impala instead of a Volkswagen mini-van.
Dean, his eighteen-year-old son who's watching him now, leaning on the hood of the Impala, hands tucked in the pockets of his leather jacket, a near-perfect replica of the man John met almost 24 years ago.
It was Dean.
“Hey, Dad, you okay?”
Dean's question startles him from his thoughts, and John forces himself to answer, hoping his voice sounds more steady than he is.
“Yeah...yeah, I'm fine,” he says gruffly. “Let's go.”
He walks over to the driver's side and opens the door, sliding into the seat the way he has a thousand times before. But somehow, he knows, nothing will ever be the same again.
